Brian - December 3rd, 2007 - Well, Heroes Sucked
This season of Heroes was terrible. That should've been obvious with the introduction of the new heroes, not one of which was likable. The New Orleans girl was daft, taking too many episodes to figure out what she could do and never actually doing anything. Except of course jumping rope, which is a suitable use of a super power if you're six and also an idiot. The Hondurans were both personality-less and forgettable. West was written like he was cast in a very poor teenage drama, and I'll be happy if Claire never dates again.
The only new personality comes in the form of villains. Although I didn't much care for Monroe's character, he was at least a character. Mori was disappointing; there was so much potential there, so much that they built him up in the previous season, but then they leave him in a dream and forget about him. Veronica, er, L, was pretty good. But my opinion is pretty skewed there. Bob was certainly menacing, but not in any way which indicates that he actually has motivations. Who does he even work with at this point? Most of the founders were eliminated.
The only shine comes from the already established characters, and even only a few of them. Noah (HRG as the kids on the street call him) is still top tier, and he stays that way throughout. He's the only one that seems to have any sort of direction and purpose while most other characters flounder for reason. Sylar is as awesome as always; even without his powers, he causes more chaos than any of the other antagonists. Hiro and Peter are wildly underutilized. I think Hiro might've used his power three times in the whole season, and Peter, don't get me started on Peter. Has more potential than any of them, and yet they still blow their whole special effects budget on him opening a safe. As for Micah and Nicci, well, meh.
The season's real failings are the story arcs, though. In the first season, everyone's pushing and pulling against each other as they all approach the same finale. In this season, everyone is practically working in isolation. Only a handful of characters had any idea that their world was about to end. Hiro spends half the season 400 years separated from everyone else. None of the New Orleans story arcs even touch the main storyline, aside from bringing in Bob ocassionally and giving a little information about the virus. The same with the Hondurans. It's like we have three or four little stories going on here, and none of them are good enough to hold their own. Unless crossing the border is supposed to be this season's big take-away.
Overall, I'm wildly disappointed. The show started out so strong, and there were a few exciting points where I thought this season might be equally good. But there was just nothing fulfilling here worth watching.
